  • 4 Methods And Tools To Migrate from Shopify to Magento

Here is a quick guide on how to successfully do a migration of all data (sales, customers, products & categories) from a Shopify store to a Magento store. The below list starts with the the longest/hardest ways to move from Shopify to Magento and ends with the fastest/easiest ways to do it. Please read it until the end as there are things you need to do that can't be transferred from Shopify to Magento.

    1. 1. Manually

This is the longest way to move your Shopify shop to Magento. It would only be recommended for shops who *just* begun and can manually move a few products/categories and a few customers/sales by hand. All you need to do is to have 2 screens side-by-side (or be a professional of the ALT+TAB) and pick the information from Shopify and move it to Magento. There is a small risk of error due to the fact it’s being manually done by a human, however, no database corruption is possible with this.

    2. Hardcode the transfer

This is one for technical users or those who are working with handy programmers. You basically just need to use Shopify’s API to collect sales, customers, products & categories data and then you need to import it into Magento’s database. You just need to make sure that your sales, customers, products & categories ID’s are unique and will not be overlapped by Magento’s default ones (if you installed dummy data). There is a small risk of conflict as you rely 100% on the programmer’s quality of work.

    1. Use an semi-automated service

Some services exist where you can move the products, customers & orders data. The price of these services is based on the number of products on your web store. All you need is to re-create the categories and assign the products to them. For extra, you can even have the categories transferred! With this service, all you need to do is to correct the template issues that might appear due to moving from Shopify to Magento. Minimal work is needed and programmer should do just a few hours to fix problems that may appear after transfer. We recommend MagneticOne for this service as we have moved over 50 websites with them without any issues. We also know that litextension offers a similar service, but we have not tested it ourselves.

    1. Use a fully-automated service

You want to continue operating your business while someone takes care of moving your shop from Shopify to Magento? This kind of service will first move a few products, categories, customers & orders data to see how it will appear on the new Magento shop. Then, once all possible design/compatibility issues are taken care of, the full migration will happen. Minimal to no downtime will happen during the switch and it’s the fastest and, obviously, easiest way to do the move. Minimal work is needed and programmer work is not necessary at all. We recommend using MagneticOne for this service.

Please note that to do any of these four solutions, you will need to have a Magento website ready with your new design already installed. Pages (such as terms & conditions, shipping policies, etc.) will need to be transferred manually, but it is an easy task because Shopify has a built-in “HTML Code Switcher” so that you can copy and paste code in new Magento Pages you create. Just be careful with the links as the path or URL might change on your Magento installation. Also, you will need to do a base setup on your Magento to have your sales tax, shipping methods and payment methods so it's fully transactionnal.
